About:

Teresa Brewer received her BS, MS, and EdS from Georgia Southwestern University. She has 27 years of teaching experience in the public school system and served as grade level chairperson for 8 years with the Jeff Davis County School System. She also served as a mentor for both beginning teachers and student teachers during her teaching career. In 1997, she was awarded Teacher of the Year for her county. Additionally, she has participated in training which focused on substance abuse counseling skills, screening, assessment, treatment planning, and professional and ethical responsibilities. She believes that individuals in addiction recovery must be treated with compassion, dignity, and respect.

The curriculum at ALANA focuses on Substance Abuse Awareness, Relapse Prevention, Coping Skills, Personal Growth and Development, and Life Skills. The curriculum has been developed with the learning styles of individuals in mind---visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Lessons include multi-dimensional educational experiences that include video clips, research based educational readings, interactive worksheets, learning focused games, interactive exercises, and more. Our curriculum is monitored continuously and adapted to fit the needs of the population we serve.

One unique quality of the curriculum is the incorporation of experiential learning. Her training as a Certified Experiential Specialist involves assisting learners in developing personal understanding, knowledge, skills, beliefs, and attitudes through direct experiences and reflection. An activity can include anything from an individual demonstrating understanding of a concept through explanation or reflection, practicing a skill in a variety of ways (e.g.- journaling, art directives, etc.) or interactions with peers to develop an understanding of content (e.g.- role-play, small group projects, etc.). We provide the best substance abuse education available.

During her spare time, Teresa enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and participating in outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and fishing.
